I believe most institution or research bodies in Malaysia, haven't switch from the "Quantity" to "Quality" concept. That's why our neighbour is ahead of us.
Just as your title implied, two components that linked for a successful research are from (1) Biotechnology and (2) Medical field. If talk about the original concept, these two components: one is concern about the basic sciences and one is about the medical usefulness - must be linked so that a final aim is to promote a good quality life that we can live better, stay healthy, eat healthy and live longer.
However, often can see that in Malaysia, these two fields totally aren't linked in most researches. Most biotechnologists/biotechnology industries are more focus in discovery new active compound from plants [Phase I - the discovery stage]. Whereas, the medical sides are working on clinical trials of drugs developed from overseas private companies [Phase IV - the market phase]. Neither one has approach each other in Phase II and Phase III, where the quality of project is concerned and be optimized to be useful for target market.
I believe in between these Phase I and Phase IV, there is an opportunity for both biotechnology and biomedical field. Like most overseas instituions did, to improve quality is the main aim. I think all those companies like Abott, Norvatis etc tend to study "Bioequivalence" where all their drugs are optimized for every patient (which may due to the ethnic/sex/social differences that could linked to different gene composition, thus different adsorption metabolisms of drugs into their bodies, for example). It is an example of research works on a "Quality product" aim.
I suggest Malaysia govt should put an effort to link a bridge btw basic science and clinical science field. No matter for what kind of sample is (animal, human, plant, bacteria, viruses etc), i guess the real aim is to improve life quality.
Hope the big people in our nation can realize these, and with their power, to link or to set up a system like this should be no problem, just a question "whether they willing to do it or not".

Fwuahh, haha, wen ni, long comment ar. wakaka
More come to worst lar for biotech field is the govern busy doing their best to promote themselve rather than improve country. Before they stabilise in their stand, can't see they will have put effort in improving this sector.
Those private company also depend on profit to expand the research, mostly.. How much researcher really have own interest to go on nowaday.. kesian nia..
hi guys sorry for late reply on comments given, ideas from you guys are great, and hope policy makers can get some humble opinions from us, point of views from both research student and industry lines.
Wen Ni, I agree with you that a success discovery must bring into practical used, and also in vivo, clinical trials should carry out besides in vitro study. Sometime, the fact there is particular party that doesn’t recognise/acknowledge the effectiveness of traditional herbs / medicinal plants from developing countries. Anyway, I think things are getting better now.
I believe this is what our country plan to do, make research findings into application, but I think mostly still stick to agricultural aspect, but it’s worthwhile to diversify the applications, ranging from traditional herb medicine, neutraceutical, etc. Undeniable, we need a bridge to link these fields,
Also, the recent trend in scientific research is most students prefer to carry out studies on disease, medical rather than basic science. This is a global trend if I not mistaken, simply because lack of funding and interest on it.
Wei siong, this is definitely a two way direction, first by attracting foreign companies established their factory, warehouse, so that increase the job opportunities and recruit foreign expertises to share their skills, etc.
Secondly, we need to provide a platform for local talents to exhibit their expertise. Yesterday I had lunch with a JPA scholar; he is planning to apply a PhD studentship at Glasgow, currently master student in another UK institution. He was the first batch student sent by the government to do biotech, and according to him most of the students also can’t get related job after competed their studies.
I agree with you, in the last sentence. Also, the quality of the students nowadays also another issue, most of them doing post grad simply because their “naïve thinking” that postgraduate education will increase their employment. In fact, not many students are interest driven.
